Olympiad advances to state

The Science Olympiad team participated in the organization?s regional competition Feb. 27 at Fairfax High School and will be advancing to state competition next month. The 15-member team placed 11th overall out of 23 high schools in the competition, which requires teams to participate in 23 separate events.

“I was pretty satisfied because this was my first time competing,” sophomore Alexandra Ouyang said, “but States is more competitive and I definitely want to improve.”

Sophomore Whitney Wu is happy with the results of the team?s first performance in Regional competition. She felt the team?s success was influenced by its close relationships.

Sophomores Elizabeth Culbertson and Malavika Sahai worked together to earn 4th place in the Trajectory event and 5th place in the Experimental Design event.

“We were really, super excited [to win] because we worked super hard,” Culbertson said.

Trajectory was one of several events that required preparation ahead of time.

On the other hand, some of the events of Science Olympiad do not require any preparation.

To compete in Experimental Design, competitors show up and “they give you many materials to make a lab based on a topic,” Culbertson said.

Members of Science Olympiad are currently getting ready for State competition on April 24 at Lake Braddock High School.
