Goss, Johnson qualify for districts

The track and field team recently attended the Northern Virginia Inivitational, held at Thomas Edison High School on April 9 and 10, and achieved some good results.

Seniors Brittany Johnson and Meara Goss each won one of the events they participated in. Goss earned first place in the girls? discus, while Johnson placed first in the girls? long jump. Both athletes also qualified for district competition in these events. Additionally, Johnson qualified in the triple jump and Goss earned qualification in the shotput.

Team members feel as if the team is making good progress.

“[Our recent competitions] went well and we had some good [Personal Records] set by different individuals on the team,” Johnson said.

The team is beginning to prepare for the bulk of the season, which will be the upcoming District and invitational matches, by running practices longer and intensifying drills.

“Practices have been longer nowadays to keep us conditioned and try to reach our potential,” sophomore Luigi Fernandez said.

Team members will also be participating in a variety of important events in the coming weeks. Several runners and throwers participated in the Fifth Annual Viking Track and Field Invitational, held at Walt Whitman High School on Saturday, but results were not available at press time.

The team will also be participating in the Cassels XBC Track Inivitational, held on April 24 at Chantilly High School.

Many athletes believe that these events are good for preparation for the wide variety of competitions they will attend over the course of the season.

“Invitationals are where the real competition is and [they] help you get prepared for districts,” sophomore Natasha Yaqub said.

The team will also be competing in a meet against Fairfax High School and Stone Bridge High School, held at Fairfax on April 28, and hope to continue to do well in district competition.
