Maple Avenue brings East and West together

Maple Avenue Restaurant incorporates a wide array of foreign flavors into their contemporary American style of food. Additionally, the ingredients are organic and supplied by local providers.

The menu at Maple Avenue is comprised of small plates, main plates and sweet plates (appetizers, main courses and desserts, respectively).

One of the small plates we ordered was the Spanish dumplings ? tiny morsels of minced beef, carrots, potatoes and onions cased in batter and deep fried. Unfortunately, they had a very neutral, bland taste.

Another small plate was the Thai okra. It had a tangy, sweet-and-sour chile sauce that will make the roof of your mouth tingle and resurrect taste buds deep down your tongue. The okra itself was a bit greasy and dry; the sauce did not cover this completely.

We also ordered a small plate of baked macaroni and cheese. This dish was not your typical school macaroni and cheese. It had cheese-filled bow-tie pastas, with a milky, not-so-smooth cheese sauce. The crunchy panko crumbs sprinkled on top distinguish this unique dish from more traditional macaroni and cheese.

One of the more American main plates that Maple Avenue showcases is the Angus Burger, a 1/3 pound of Angus beef cooked exactly to your liking on a buttered bun, complimented with juicy pickles and lettuce. The beef itself had a great flavor and juice to it, but, unfortunately, both sides of the bun were lathered in a heavy truffle mayonnaise dressing. Not only did the dressing make the Angus burger a heart attack on a bun, but it also overpowered the taste of the meat and other condiments.

Another American-style dish offered is the Dr. Pepper ribs. Cooked to perfection in a broth of Dr. Pepper soda, the ribs were sweet and tangy, and, despite the fact that they are cooked in soda, had no flavor resembling the bubbly drink.

The sweet plate menu offers a wide variety of intricate, creative deserts such as the mochi delight. This delectable desert featured two balls of rich, flavorful ice cream wrapped in sweetened rice flour.

With a limited amount of space, the tables were crammed together. As for the food, the dessert was phenomenal, unlike the flavorless entrees, and stole the show with its rich, satisfying flavors. Settle for just dessert and coffee at Maple Avenue, taking advantage of the best aspects of the restaurant.
