Seniors? success sets standards

As their departure for college draws near, two seniors are cementing their reputation as some of the most accomplished track and field athletes in school history.

Meara Goss and Brittany Johnson continued their dominance at the TJ Penultimate Experience meet held at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) on May 8. Goss won the girls? discuss and placing third in the girls? shot put. Johnson placed second in the girls? long jump.

Sophomore July Laszakovits believes that, despite the loss of these seniors, the team will be strong next year.

?By the time this year?s freshmen [mature], the team will be much stronger,? Laszakovits said.

Junior A.J. Norton is confident in the team?s ability to succeed at districts.

?I think this team will have many successes because the coaches train us hard each day and help us focus on our goals,? Norton said.

The team is particularly young this season, with five seniors and a considerably larger amount of underclassmen.

?Turnover is a dilemma faced by most teams every year,? junior John Tortella said. ?But [Goss] and [ Johnson] are the only seniors who have been on the team for all four of their years [as Statesmen].?

District competition will take place at TJHSST today and tomorrow while regional competition will run from May 28-29.
