Spring track and field competed at district and regional competitions this season, with seniors Brittany Johnson and Meara Goss qualifying for the 2010 VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Championships.

Neither Johnson, who qualified for the triple jump, nor Goss, who qualified for shotput, actually competed at the State Championships. Johnson was injured, so she did not participate. Goss, on the other hand, went to prom instead of competing at States.

?[Track] was a great experience,? freshman Amber O?Rourke, a sprinter, said. ?We all really bonded as a team.? Though she was happy with the results of the season, O?Rourke hopes ?to do better next year.?

At the Northern Region Outdoor Track and Field Championships meet on May 27 and 28 at Lake Braddock Secondary School, Johnson placed second for the long jump.

?It was a great season,? Johnson said. For the 400 meter dash, junior Marshe Williams qualified for regional finals, and Goss medaled at eighth place.

Other regional competitors included freshmen O?Rourke. Sydney Barker, Claudia Castaneda, Gelare Ghajar-Rahimi and Alexandra Sandlin, juniors Caitlin Greene, Courtney Herbolsheimer and Alexander Norton, and seniors Stephen Savage and Andrew Dickson.

Sophmore Keiran Snow- Dawson said the best part of the season was ?running in meets.? Snow-Dawson, a sprinter, thought the season was ?fun [and] exciting.?

At the Liberty District Championship on May 18 and 19, the girl?s team came in fourth overall, with 69 points. The boys? team finished eighth with 22 points. Johnson placed first in four separate events, while senior Steven Savage won in boys? discus. Johnson?s time from the Regional qualifying race broke school record, and Goss was district champion for shot put, with a throw reaching 32?7.25??.

16 students beat their personal best at the District Championship and 8 medaled, qualifying them for regionals.

?It was a great season,? Johnson said. ?I improved a lot.?

Johnson holds the school record for the high jump.
