Show proves un-event-ful

NBC’s newest prime time show, The Event, was one that could be missed. Though not a bad show, The Event was nothing exceptional.

The show uses a flashback technique that provides the viewer with an irrelevant details about the President (Blair Underwood) and background information for the main character?s story.

Most of the show revolves around the actions of protagonist Sean (Jason Ritter) and his girlfriend, Leila (Sarah Roemer). The couple is embarking on a romantic cruise in which Sean intends to propose to Leila. Of course, this all goes awry and Sean is left without a girlfriend to propose to and in the mystery of where she is and what has happened.

Alongside Sean?s misfortune is the story of the President of the United States. With most of the President?s portion taking place in flashbacks and revolving around happenings unknown to the audience little can be taken away plot-wise until the climax and end of the episode.

The show is made well and flows throughout, giving enough information to keep the viewer interested but still almost entirely in the dark about anything save sub-plots. With the show ending on an enormous cliffhanger the show really only shows appeal if you?re one for mysteries or a Lost-esque viewer.

The Event was nothing spectacular, the only shining moment was the tail-end where what I assume ?the event? was took place. Despite this, the series as a whole shows promise for the kind of viewer who doesn?t mind to be occasionally left in the dark. At the very least the show will have a successful first season however whether or not this is going to be another Lost remains to be seen.
