Despite an otherwise positive start to the season, the varsity field hockey team lost on Wednesday in a game to McLean High School 1-0.

The single goal, scored in the second half of the game from a penalty shot, leaves the team ?in a bit of a scoring drought,? coach Christina Carroll said.

?[We] have been working hard to get the ball in the net and maintain intensity throughout the game,? she said.

Varsity player and senior Chandani Rana called the game?s single goal ?unfair.?

?We were a better team,? she said. ?[The goal] was scored on a stroke so it wasn?t even a regular game goal. I think we were just having an off-game.?

Despite this, Carroll believes that most ?games can go either way [and that] much depends on which team came to play and many games are decided by one goal.?

This year?s team, co-captained by senior Emily Clark and junior Maddie O?Beirne, has started ?off on a good foot? teammate junior Annie Greenwood said. ?I hope we keep it up.?

?We are going to do really well,? sophomore player Katie Clark said.

?Our team has gotten closer [and] our team has gotten really strong this year,? she said.

?Not that we didn?t get along last year,? Rana said, ?but this year we just know each other a lot better.?

Carroll said their current team goal of the season is simply to be ?playing [their] best by the district tournament so that [they] can advance to the regional tournament.?

The team?s winning record, which currently stands at 9-3, has fueled high hopes for some of the team members that they will travel to states this year.

Continuing in their districts game, the team plans to go on the ?region tournaments and then hopefully we can go on to states,? Rana said.

?We would all really like to go to states this year,? Clark said.

Two-year player junior April Reinhart said her team can go that far.

?[We can] make it [to] states this year or, if not, definitely districts,? she said.

Although the teams faces a ?tough district schedule,? according to Carroll, she believes the season start was positive.

?It?s [unfortunate] that the last two games that we?ve played we?ve lost because they were all district games,? Rana said.

?Those were games that we really should have won,? she said. Carroll however is ?happy as long as we learn something from each game.?

Tonight?s game is the team?s Senior Night against Fairfax High School.
