Statesmen held scoreless by Langley despite fan turnout

The Marshall Statesmen and the Langley Saxons, long-time division rivals, met in yet another football game on a warm and wet Friday evening. The Saxons (2-1) came off of a loss to Chantilly High School the previous week and the Statesmen (1-2) were coming off a sweet victory against Falls Church.
Langley elected to receive first and Marshall stopped them on downs and the Statesmen fans, all covered in black, were wild from excitement. However, the great play did not continue as Marshall fumbled the football and the Saxons recovered and later turned it into the first touchdown of the game.
At the end of the first quarter Langley was ahead, 14-0, and their starting running back, junior Philip Mun, scored both of the touchdowns. This was not the start the Statesmen were looking for, especially against a very talented team like Langley where there’s no room for error.
During the second quarter, Langley added one more touchdown, but more importantly, there was a scary moment for Marshall as senior and running back Tyler Snook went down on the field and seemed to have hurt his ankle. The athletic training staff rushed out as the stands hushed, but Snook was able to walk off the field. The first half ended with the score 21-0 favoring Langley.
The third quarter was not any better for the Statesmen. However, in the fourth quarter, Marshall got into the redzone and was almost successful at scoring a touchdown. The Langley defense was just too strong that night and Marshall was stopped on fourth down. The game ended with the final score 35-0 Langley.
Despite a disappointing result for Marshall, it was still positive to see so many students come out wearing all black and supporting our school’s football team. Spirit is very important in a football game, and I’m sure that, if people keep coming and supporting Marshall, the Statesmen will be able to gain momentum and win more games.
