Mixed hockey team dominates Loudon Valley/Woodgrove

The Lake Braddock/Marshall ice hockey team won 6-1 against Loudon Valley/Woodgrove on Feb. 10.

“I scored two goals, sophomore Dirk Edison scored one and the other three goals came from our teammates from Lake Braddock,” assistant team captain Scott Henning, senior, said.

Henning leads the team with nine goals in seven games. Sophomore Edward Hirka is second with seven goals in eight games.

Despite its win, the team lost a “close game that [it] could’ve won” three days earlier against Robinson/Jeb Stuart with a score of 3-4 on Feb. 6, Edison said.

“Three of our best players—Henning, Edison and Hirka—were out. We had a few breaks and were winning at first, but they got lucky and scored twice in the end,” goalie Logan Hirka, senior, said.

The team plays as a part of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League. It has a current team record of 7-2 with a total of 59 goals for and 31 goals against.

“I started playing [ice hockey] when I was eight years old and just loved it,” Edward Hirka said. The team is in the high school league and has players from both Marshall and Lake Braddock.”

The Lake Braddock/Marshall team, which includes eight Marshall students, has a “nice balance of advanced players, players who could skate the puck and some players that are still starting out to play the fundamentals,” team captain Joe Robinson, junior, said.

Although the team is strong on offense, there is a difference in some of the players’ talent levels.

“We’re friendly and know and work with one another really well,” Edison said. “But there’s a difference in the players’ individual skills.”

According to Robinson, ice hockey is a sport dependent on speed.

“The speed was what drew me to the sport,” Robinson said. “It’s not like football or baseball where you get to have breaks; it’s constant play.”

The team has also drawn support from Marshall students.

“At our game against Oakton, the Marshall Mob came out to support us,” Henning said.

The season started in October and will end in February, with only two games left to play, according to Edward Hirka.
The team’s next game is this Friday.
