Boys lacrosse challenges Langley, sees the positive in loos, record

The boys lacrosse team is frustrated with its 1-11 record.

The Statesmen lost to Langley High School 11-14 last Thursday. With their loss by only three goals to the first in the district, lacrosse powerhouse Langley, the game left the team optimistic and looking forward to its upcoming matches.

The loss comes after Marshall’s 14-4 loss to Stone Bridge High School last Tuesday, despite a strong first start in goal by senior James Tickner.

Captain Greyson Smith, senior, thinks that the team played poorly in that game.

“The team overall is not performing where we feel we should be this year, but we have been having problems with injuries and absences on game days,” Smith said.

Most players are optimistic about the last two games of the regular season, against McLean High School and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, junior Daniel Dallen said.

The game against McLean was important for the team’s placement in the Liberty District tournament.

“Currently we hope to beat McLean next week so we do not play Langley to start the district tournament,” Smith said before the game.

“There has been some smack talk, some Twitter beef. So hopefully we’ll take [McLean] on and beat them,” captain Sam Travis, junior, added.

Travis emphasized the squad’s positive team dynamic.

“We are a great group of friends, brothers,” he said.

“Our motto this year is Brotherhood which means to always look out for each other, play as a team, and do everything for each other,” Steiner said.

Head coach Andrew Freeman hopes that the season will not end before his team’s hard work pays off.
“I really like these guys. Hopefully in these next two weeks we will be able to pull it together and really do something cool, as a group, he said.

“This is probably from top to bottom one of the more talented and able lacrosse teams that we have had in a while,” he said.

Travis saw potential for more success next year.

“JV is looking pretty solid,” he said. “Hopefully some of those players will move up.”

“I’m just wondering when the Marshall Mob is going to show up,” Steiner added.

Results against McLean were unavailable by press time.
