Healthy lunch programs a model for the county

The healthier food options at the Statesmen Station is an incentive for students to purchase from this line instead of the regular lunch line.

The pilot lunch line known as the Statesmen Station made a splash in the Northern Virginia community, providing healthier lunch options; it is the first of its kind in Fairfax County.

Real Food for Kids, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy food in Fairfax County, planned and supported the Statesmen Station.

According to sophomore Olivia Hammermaster, the purpose of the station is to provide kids with the nutrition and energy that they need.

“Hopefully [the food] affects [students’ bodies] so they can do better in sports and focus during the day,” Hammermaster, president of the Nutrition Club, said.

A song promoting the new station called “The wRap,” sung and written by students Nikki Pope, Jessica Campbell, Marcelo Guzman, Kailee Sibs and Wynne Treco, with the help of English teacher Matthew Horne, was featured on WUSA 9 and in the Washington Post.

“It was amazing and a great experience,” senior Jessica Campbell said. “Many people don’t realize how big the new station is.” The new lunch line occupies the space formerly used by the senior lounge.

Although the inclusion of the Statesmen Station has not caused problems with the transition, there have been a few issues regarding price.

“What we have now is more expensive than the regular food,” Hammermaster said. “It’s hard to make a change that costs a lot of money.”
