Track team expands and improves in winter season

This season has marked a wildly sucessful year for field and track, with senior Mackenzie Haight dominating state and school track records and Marshall’s field division coming off a program expansion.

Haight was the 2014 boys 5A 3200m state champion, clocking in with a record-breaking 9:16.62. Not only did his time set the new state meet record, but it also broke Marshall’s previous indoor and all-time best times.

Moving beyond the confines of limited budgets and space, Marshall’s field team is offering players the chance to practice and compete in pole-vaulting for the first time ever.

This change marks a huge expansion in Marshall field program, hopefully paving the way for future opportunities for young athletes.

“We want to give [our athletes] the best,” head coach Clifford Wong said. “They work hard, practice hard, and need the right equipment to keep doing that. This [opportunity] gives them that.”

So far, the new program has allowed for increased achievement in Marshall’s field categories, with sophomore Jack Elliser achieving high marks in both regionals and states.
