Dickey’s impresses, but only for meat lovers

The popular chain Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, which originated in Texas, has finally made its way to Fairfax. Located in the Halstead Square in Merrifield, Dickey’s is a great place to catch a quick lunch or dinner.

Dickey’s features a great outdoor seating area furnished with a variety of plants, as well as metallic tables and chairs that give the area an industrial feel. The interior is cramped, with fewer than ten tables; the small space can prove problematic on a busy day.

Offering an array of chicken, pork, beef and turkey products, Dickey’s unfortunately carries few vegetarian sides and no vegetarian main dishes. This limitation caused some problems, as I came with a vegetarian friend whose meal had to consist of only a mac ‘n cheese side.

I ordered the “Lil’ Hoagie,” which cost me $4, and a small side of “Waffle Iron Fries” at $2.25. Despite the lack of vegetarian options, the food we did order was well worth the price.

The hoagie I ordered was small, but stuffed full of grilled chicken. The meat was juicy and obviously of high quality, and the waffle fries were fantastic. I paired the sandwich with the Dickey’s hot barbecue sauce, which was also outstanding: a typical barbecue sauce, but with a spicy aftertaste.

Overall, Dickey’s offers a fairly-priced menu with a variety of excellent meat products. I will definitely return, but next time I’ll order take-out to avoid the dense crowd.
