Both the boys and girls swim team had two wins each in the district, the girls’ victory after an eight-year losing streak.

The boys and girls teams also finished third in the conference finals.

Sophomore Elizabeth Gardner, senior Tabatha Horner and freshmen Alison Park and Lauren Kaup set a new school record in the 200 meter freestyle relay at the conference.

Two swimmers qualified for the state meet: senior Adib Milani in the 100 meter breaststroke and Horner in the 50 meter freestyle.

“I’m really proud of how the fiercely the team has competed this season,” coach and English teacher Julie Curtin said.

The swim team as a whole has collectively improved in meets this past season.

“The team has been doing well because each and everyone of us has set a goal at the beginning of the season and has practiced in order to reach it, ” senior Dalila Ferrara said.

This season, practices have been more demanding than many in the past, and the team’s overall points have gone up. The large number of swimmers gives a solid foundation for the team to score more points in total rather than relying on several medal-winning swimmers.

Practices are held every Monday to Thursday for one hour at Providence REC Center; meets are every Friday.

“Our meets are at the same times as the basketball games, so we usually only catch the 4th quarter,” junior Nick Boinay said.

The swim team is also working toward team-bonding activities, and the athletes are closer to each other. They often have spaghetti dinners, and enjoy going to Silver Diner after meets.
