Music and activity choices revamp prom

Attendees arrived at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. on the night of June 4 for a prom that, although maintaining tradition in certain aspects, featured unique additions to separate it from those of years past.

While the junior class board of the Student Government Association placed an emphasis on creating new activities for prom, junior and board member Kevin Fogarty cited the venue, which featured Roman-styled architecture, as the prom’s best feature.

“Mellon was the absolute perfect place for prom,” junior Kevin Fogarty said,”  and will certainly be hard for other classes to replicate going forward.”

The activities at prom included caricature booths and specialty drink bars, as well as a live music area where Marshall alumni Ethan Schaefer and Nikki Pope performed throughout the night.

“The live music aspect was an interesting addition to prom this year,” Schaefer said. “The balcony that we played on quickly became a place where the students could get away from the dance party and enjoy some live music and a breeze.”

Seniors Bella Orobaton and Joshua Blake were crowned prom queen and king at the dance, an honor that Orobaton called a humbling experience.

“When Mr. Litz called my name I was shocked and speechless. I honestly think my heart stopped beating for a second,” Orobaton said. “Ultimately this title mean the support and respect of my peers, which is such a wonderful and overwhelming feeling.”
