Robe color change breaks gender barriers

While graduation robes have traditionally been blue for female students and red for male students, the robes graduating seniors will wear for the ceremony at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall on June 21 will be columbia blue with two red stripes and red ribbon cuffs.

“The purpose [of the change] was to get rid of the gender divide in the graduating class’ robes,” SGA member and senior Elnaz Ghajar-Rahimi said.

Rather than make a change to all blue or all red robes, the administration opted to combine the two into an entirely new design.

“The point that the county wanted to make was really that everyone should have the same robe,” principal Jeff Litz said. “We decided to go with both colors because that really does symbolize Marshall, and we wanted to represent both colors.”
