Cooking on and off the court: Marshall’s new culinary chef and basketball coach

After graduating from the Marshall Academy in 2011, Sean Appleby’s love for teaching became a reality.

“I started coaching basketball because I just love the sport,” Appleby said. “It’s so much fun.”

Appleby started coaching small programs during high school preparing him for working at Marshall now.

I’ve been coaching basketball since I was a sophomore in high school,” Appleby said. “So this was just the perfect opportunity for me.”

Appleby’s favorite part about teaching is seeing students grow in a hobby and talent as coach of the girls freshman basketball team.

“There are girls that are still learning how to even do a layup properly, but seeing that progression really means a lot to me,”Appleby said.

Even when Appleby was the manager for the girl’s varsity basketball team when he was a student at Madison High School, Appleby said he enjoyed watching the growth first-hand.

Applebee also said he is seeing growth in his new job as head chef for the culinary classes.

“I had some students that couldn’t hold a knife, but now they’re really good at it,” Appleby said.

The Marshall culinary kitchen is unique to any kitchen Appleby has ever worked at. Appleby said he believes that the Marshall kitchen has everything you may need to know for the basics of culinary arts.

After spending his own high school experience in the Marshall Academy as well, Appleby wants to continue to bring his students the joy he felt when he was a student here.
