Baseball strikes out competition

In its last stretch, varsity baseball rounded out its regular season play with a record of ten wins and seven losses after facing Stonebridge and Madison high schools last Tuesday and Friday, respectively.

“We’ve had a couple of tough losses in the district,” junior Ryan Medric said. Teams that gave the Statesman tough competition were McLean, Fairfax and Stonebridge High Schools. Stonebridge has a number one pitcher while Langley has a “good solid staff,” head coach Joseph McDonald said.

“We are only as strong as our weakest link and we try and bring them to the highest level that we can,” senior Dan Ashley said.

Despite the losses, the season is historic in that it is a winning season for the team. Also, the team has continued to go into practices with a positive mindset and a batting average of over .500.

According to Ashley, the team was a “sophomore-heavy team” but now that the majority of the team comprises of juniors with at least one year of varsity experience, the team’s level of playing has improved.

The team may leave players in scoring position “on any given night and we have to do a better job of getting timely hits … to be able to score those runs,” McDonald said.

“There is always room for improvement,” senior Carson Monroe said. “However, the team is “always gonna grow no matter how much we succeed or don’t.”
