Kumar shares on VYI basketball experience

During the winter season, some Statesmen prefer to play in an outside basketball league instead of for their high school. Whether it be due to difficulty making high school practices or wanting to compete at a level with less pressure, students choose to play on one of Vienna Youth Incorporated’s 20 high school basketball teams.

“The league is fun and you get to play against your friends,” sophomore Shreeyas Kumar said.

This is Kumar’s first year playing on a team consisting of sophomore through senior boys.

“I got interested in basketball after watching other people play,” Kumar said. “Since a lot of my friends were playing VYI basketball I decided to give it a try.”

Once-a-week practices allow teams to prepare for games where they can release their competitive attitudes and still have fun.

The league will close for Kumar after his senior year, but he is not worried about losing the game forever as he plans to continue playing pickup games at local gyms.
