The 90th edition of the Academy Awards come at the conclusion of a strong season for movies, and will see the best of Hollywood pitted against each other for the most prestigious awards in the industry.
I have seen the majority of the nominated movies and though there are 24 categories in the entire show, I will only be predicting my winners for the four top awards; Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Director.
As the most anticipated category of the night, Best Picture is full of eight critically acclaimed movies. The entire list of nominees is extremely strong, but the clear top two are The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri due to their strong ratings.
Though The Shape of Water earned a staggeringly high 13 nominations and is the favorite in this category, I personally feel that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has the ability to snag the title of Best Picture. This dark dramedy is unique and confusing due to its inclusion of everything from murders to arson, and is sure to pull through for the win.
The Best Actress category is full of talent from Saoirse Ronan’s strong depiction of a coming-of-age teen to Margot Robbie’s near-perfect imitation of Tonya Harding. Frances McDormand is favored to win this category and I agree to this but I can see any of these women earning the Oscar win.
The Best Actor nominees are all good this year, but the overall category is not incredibly strong. Although I deeply love the character Elio played by Timothée Chalamet, Gary Oldman’s transformation into Winston Churchill is sure to secure him this category.
This year’s Best Director lineup is incredibly strong. While I love Christopher Nolan for including the heartthrob Harry Styles in his film, I want him to win because this is his first-ever Best Director nomination. But, I believe that Guillermo del Toro will win the category for his immaculate creation of a human-fish love story.
Overall, the 90th Academy Awards will have contain surprises for categories regardless of their popularity.
