Thinkabit Labs fostered creative experimentation

Lemon Road Elementary School participated in a rank&file contest for best article in the sixth grade, and the following story was a runner up.

Recently, our sixth grade classes took a field trip to a hands-on interactive science lab called Thinkabit Labs. The trip was composed of four parts: the career interest portion, the coding portion, lunch, and the build-a-robot portion.

When asked if it was easy to understand the instructions for the coding portion of trip, Miotisoa Randrianantenaina replied, “Oh no, it was like trying to understand Einstein or rocket science.” But she is not the only one. Sixth grade student Tammy Jimenez said it was not only difficult to understand, but was also not a very important trip for future sixth graders, seeing as they already learn coding at school.

Probably the most enjoyed part of the trip was the part where the participants built a robot.  All the kids who attended had creative ideas, such as breakdancing pineapples, race cars, moving sharks, and much more.  Another enjoyed activity was when the sixth graders got to learn about careers by flipping through cards that explained each one.

“I think it gives kids ideas about careers they may not have considered before,” says outdoor educator and the trip planner Katie Busch, “It should definitely be a future trip.”  Busch was not only the person who organized the trip, but also led part of the coding portion of it.

While some found our new trip not enjoyable, others perceived it quite differently. “It should definitely be a trip for future sixth graders,” said sixth grade student Sean Alfaro. “I loved it.”

“Yes this should be a future field trip,” said sixth grade teacher, Jake Miller.  “All my students were successful even though some didn’t have time to finish.”

Do you want this trip to be a part of your sixth grade year? Well, you don’t have to wait. Thinkabit Labs is open to the public, and you can stop by and check it out anytime. Don’t forget to look for other students work!
