The most memorable thing about Lockout were the nachos I had at the theater.
What I expected from the movie was an action-packed experience and a ridiculous story line, but Lockout was an absolute failure. The story line was completely stolen from Escape from New York, a far superior movie. Even the main character’s name from Lockout, Snow, sounds just like the Escape from New York character’s name, Snake.
I was dubious when I walked into the theater that was showing John Carter. I feared that Disney would render the original story unrecognizable. My fears, however, were unfounded.
Bland office interior. Bleak weather. Tea and whiskey shared among old men and their young successors. If these images do not scream out “international spy thriller” to you, do not be surprised. In an age where films are filled with beautiful women, exotic locations, and explosive combat (look at the James Bond movies and the Mission: Impossible series), the Tomas Alfredson-directed Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is an apple among oranges. However, this change of pace and attention to detail is welcomed.
Martin Scorsese, the man who directed famous blockbusters such as Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980) and Goodfellas (1990) has recently stepped out of his comfort zone to unleash his first 3-D film Hugo.
Most holiday movies consist of lovable characters on a heartfelt and somewhat sappy journey. New Year’s Eve follows this pattern, except instead of covering one or two characters on a journey, it covers 18. As a result, the characters and plotline are poorly developed.
Thrillers have descended into a formula where you have a spy being hunted by some nameless intelligence agency. Hanna does not stray from this formula, yet the way Hanna’s story unfolds is simply breathtaking.
